The trend for 2012 is messy make up - tousled hair, stained lips and wild, metallic eyes. Experts say how one can use it in back in India, to Ismat Tahseen.
If your regime du jour is spending hours getting the whole foundation-mascara, blush and lip liner right, you might breathe a sigh of relief. The beauty trend of 2012 is defined in one word: imperfection! A site reports Terry Barber, director of makeup artistry for MAC Cosmetics as saying, "The look is "coming home from the party, not going out to the party...perfection got slightly boring! Ready to get imperfect?
What the look says:
The new look identifies with the word effortless, minimalist, or just-out-of-bed, say according well-known hair and makeup artists. So while you ditch the lip liners, brow pencils, crisp foundations good-bye, there's simply one tool you need - your fingertips! Will this work? Says celebrity make up artiste Marvie Beck, "Yes, its huge! Its sounds easy but it's not the easiest look, after we are all so used to perfection so this is new," declares Marvie Beck, adding, "I call it the grunge look, a 'night-after' effect. What's great is that you can go casual or ultra-formal with it."
Adds, says make up expert, Clint Fernandes, "Yes, natural and believable is 'in' and overdone with its heavily lined lips or super-done eyes is passe for sure. That said, here in India, the imperfect look too, will only work to a point, you have to know how."
Get cheeky!
Beck says for the cheeks it will be a matte or semi-satin look. "It's close that makes the skin look glowing rather than shimmering. You can use burnt roasted almond and desert ashen rose on the apples of the cheeks for the natural look," she says. "Apply this with a powder puff and blend the colours till they rub into or smudge on the cheek. No need of contouring," she adds.
Just dramat-eyes!
Exit the smoky look and enter metallic eyes, for this year, the metallic or wet eyelids, is hot and happening. While you use brown mascara just on the roots of your eyelashes, then dotting brown pencil in between, the eyes also have some wild colour. "It's really a sort of pared-down, glam-rock look," says make up expert, Clint Fernandes. "I'd advise using warmer metallic colours such as bronze and copper; they would go well with the Indian tone. Gun metal-grey is also big. If you don't have the product at hand, just mix a little eye shadow in Vaseline and dab it onto the eyes for the wet, glossy look," he suggests. Another updated option is to 'almost reverse the smoky eye' by applying shadow and liner below the bottom lash line instead of on the lid. "This is what we have been doing in India, anyway," adds Clint.
Tried 'suck-a-popsicle' lips?
The pout's getting a revamp too. Emily Kate Warren, who has reportedly done makeup for Yoko Ono and Jennifer Jason Leigh, describes the 2012 lip as 'Popsicle mouth' as it appears like the wearer has been sucking on an ice pop. (One saw this at the Viktor & Rolf spring 2012 runway show.) "It's the geisha-like look... more like a bright stain or gradation in the center that moves to the outer edges," says Fernandes. "You can just wear on the runway or stage or then at a party, so it's more of an evening thing. I'd advise starting lips at least half an hour before you leave for the party so it wear out a little," he adds. While electric orange and red is big, women can opt for timid browns too.
