It's time to get your wild side out as animal motifs make a splash on the jewellery scene
Wearing an animal print dress or tee has become passe. How about a snail or an alligator on your ring? A mouse or a swan pendant in your chain? Leopard print on your nails? Well, the designers say these should be a vital part of your wardrobe this season.
"Lizards, alligators and snakes motifs are a fad these days. Peacock motif is very Indian, but its usage is quite contemporary, which is why it is very trendy," says fashion designer Nandita, of the Hemant and Nandita duo, adding that animal motifs on bags and buckles also look very different and cool. But she also advises against mixing two animal motifs or wearing too much of one animal only. "Wearing an owl pendant and owl earrings is death! And so is wearing two different motifs together" warns the designer.
Designer Tanvi Kedia, who used a lot of animal motifs in her Fall/Winter 2011 collection, agrees. "I've used them vastly in my collection - scarves, garments, accessories, etc, and not just the peacocks, but elephants, crows, cows and many other animals. They are big, and won't go out of fashion any time soon, because they're an inspiration from nature," she says.
No wonder stores like Promod, Accessorize, Kazo, Aldo and others have myriad range of animal motif accessories. Apart from earrings and necklaces, the motif can be seen on accessories like brooches as well. Designer duo Bharat and Reshma have peacock brooches in their latest wedding collection. "They had to be incorporated in the designs as they're such a rage," says Reshma.
